Let’s Play Mittelalter

From 9 October 2026, part of Lübeck’s Castle Friary will be transformed into an exhibition that is a walk-in medieval gaming world – one that is not simply viewed, but played. With “Let’s Play Mittelalter”, the European Hansemuseum is breaking new ground. For the first time, the game itself becomes the central educational concept: the exhibition not only shows how games tell stories – it allows visitors to experience history as a game.

Around 60 per cent of Germans play video games, and board games are also becoming increasingly popular; the exhibition consistently reflects this reality. Visitors do not move through traditional exhibition spaces, but through a narrative game world in which historical themes, pop culture and research are interwoven.

Visitors create their own avatar, solve tasks and decide for themselves which path to take in the medieval world. It is not text that guides them through the exhibition, but the game: a tournament ground, a festive banquet in the countryside, a mysterious ‘dragon’s lair’ and other immersive settings. Each station is a chapter in the game and requires a decision to be made before moving on. Information is not simply conveyed, but earned through play.

To bring this project to life, the museum is collaborating with experts in game design, scenography, media art and specialist research. The multi-award-winning agency Liquid is designing the visual experience spaces, blending historical themes with contemporary aesthetics.

A dedicated Gaming Lab allows visitors to play and experiment freely. Through collaborations with influencers from the gaming community, the discourse is extended into digital public spheres. Side quests, interactive elements, digital extensions and special loans from other museums ensure that the exhibition appeals to both gaming fans and history enthusiasts.

Zukunftslabor

Ein Raum für Workshops und Schulprogramme

Der Höhepunkt der Ausstellung ist das Zukunftslabor: Textilien und Mode haben als Konsumobjekt und Identitätsmarker nicht an Bedeutung verloren. Gleichzeitig sind sie gegenwärtig aber auch zum Symbol für Verschwendung und einer Wegwerfgesellschaft geworden. Wie können wir unseren Bedarf an Textilien und unseren Spaß an der Mode mit einer fairen, gesunden Welt in Einklang bringen? Ist Globalisierung eine Gefahr oder bietet sie auch Chancen und Lösungen? Der Rundgang durch das Zukunftslabor mit vielen Multimedia – und Workshopangeboten bietet Informationen, Tipps und Interaktionen rund um das Thema »nachhaltiges Textil-Konsumverhalten«.

Das Lebende Buch

Dass ein Buch Geschichten erzählt, kennen wir. Aber dass sich dabei Figuren durch die Seiten bewegen, Bilder aus dem Buch heraus den Raum erobern, Stimmen und Musik ertönen, wir sogar aktiv in die Handlung eingreifen können – das wird ein komplett neues (Lese-)Erlebnis im Europäischen Hansemuseum.

Unser »Lebendes Buch« nimmt die Besucher:innen mit auf eine spannende Textil-Handelsreise durch das Mittelalter. Es geht um den Tuchhandel und damit verbundene Privilegien, Regulierung, Betrug, Konflikte und Boykotte – und den Einfluss der Hanse hierauf. Ein ebenso komplexes wie faszinierendes Thema, lassen sich doch viele Parallelen zu aktuellen Entwicklungen ziehen.
